Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular calls from the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
