But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.

The apparent and clear reality that Christ from scripture advocates for a kind of profound affection centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided great solace to help build the initiative that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections.
