Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
