The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Context of Sentencing
